Lettres du voyant Louis Henderson

with LOUIS HENDERSON

Lettres du voyant, 40', France, 2013, in English

Louis Henderson’s film Lettres du voyant is a documentary-fiction about spiritism and technology in contemporary Ghana. In a country famously stripped of its precious metals by colonialism, a new form of mining has emerged. Young workers now strip down antiquated digital hardware not only for metal but also for credit card numbers or pictures of relatives and loved ones, later to be used in internet scams. Lettres du voyant looks at how such scams blend with traditional voodoo in a practice called Sakawa. Tracing the scammers’ stories back to the time of Ghanian independence, Henderson’s film shows that this internet voodoo could be understood as a form of resistance to neocolonialism, leading the viewer on a hypnotic journey through 3D mineshafts to the goldmines, digital device dumps, and discotheques of today’s economy of extraction and deceit. After the screening, filmmaker Louis Henderson joins in conversation with film theorist SOULEYMANE DIALLO.
