The Character in the Scene

Conceptualized by ALEX MELLO

The aim of the workshop series The Character in the Scene under the direction of Alex Mello is to convey the basic principles for building characters in a scene. This proposal is about working on the construction of characters that make up the idea of carnival, such as Kolumbina, Pierrot, the madman, the bride. The workshop will work loosely based on the principles of The Stanislavski System - Tips for working on the role.

The workshop series is full, participation is no longer possible.

A total of four workshop series will be held as part of the ADKDW's Carnival Project. All four workshop series will deal on the topics of belonging, identity, body as territory, street carnival as a performative act and occupation of the city, as well as art and biography as a manifesto. By focusing on these realities, topics such as racism, affection, loneliness, discrimination, survival strategies and empowerment are dealt with and expressed in the form of a choreographic scenic play. In all series of workshops, one of the sessions will be dedicated to making costumes and stage props. As a result of the workshops, a performance is being prepared in the form of an approximately 20-minute act, which will form one of the 4 acts of the Sambópera Woy to be performed at the Rautenstrauch-Joest Museum.

The workshop series encourage discussion of the productive and expressive poetics of the body in space and as space, be it in the museum itself or in the city it inhabits. We will use wearable textiles as an inventive experimental field of freedom(s), make them, use them and move in and with them.
