NOORDKAAP TAXI Industrial Ghost Stories

With ABNER PREIS

Join the artist for a field trip full of magic and emotion, a taxi ride where ghost stories come alive on the ruins of Cologne’s famous car industry. The streets become a theatre, the abandoned warehouse becomes a life line, run-down factories bustle with movement and sound, ghosts fly in the air… The desire for adventure, the excitement of discovery, the magic of make-believe. Abner Preis guides you alongside empty fabric halls, condominium construction sites in gentrified areas, decayed car parks and old-school car-wash installations.

Industrial Ghost Stories taxis drive exclusively on Saturday nights, taking groups of max. 7 persons. Expect analogue interventions sparkled by artistic DIY interpretations of digitalised stories picked up from Mülheim residents.

Since its beginnings, the automobile has been a symbol of freedom, creating space for individuality and independence. To this day, it serves as an object of self-identification and self-representation. In Cologne, the car industry has a long tradition. On the right side of the Rhine in the Deutz district, the world’s first motorcycle factory opened in 1864 – the Klöckner-Humboldt-Deutz AG. In 1876, the first coal gas engine machine with 3 hp and 180 rotations per minute was made. Six years later, the first diesel was introduced. During a working visit to Cologne-Mülheim, in the cradle of the Westphalia car industry, Abner Preis felt a strange sensation: it seemed to him that this district, which is now radically being redeveloped, was “housing many haunted stories.” Here, Germany’s industrial history was written at the end of the 18th century. Here, about 33,000 people were once manufacturing motors, machines and industrial equipment. Today, more and more creative hotspots are evolving here, transforming the area radically.
