Film-Work Superman of Malegaon

SUPERMAN OF MALEGAON
2008 | 66’ | Documentary | India
Director: Faiza Ahmad Khan
Language: Hindi with English Subtitles

Malegaon is a dusty, noisy and dense city in India, 200 kms from Bombay, the industrial hub of popular cinema. Malegaon produces cloths and cinema – both labored by small units of family and extended clans with less than rudimentary infrastructures. The shadow of cinema falls on the power looms and the sound of the looms enters the studios. Malegaon films overtly express its allegiance to Hollywood and Bollywood cinema, and yet display extra-ordinary originality and creativity in terms of storytelling and production process. It is a distinct case of making original art in the form of copy. Superman of Malegaon is a story about a film being made / improvised in Malegaon – one that has its genesis in the Hollywood archetype, but belongs to the other end of the cinema-universe.
