Fragments from the Potosí Archive

with ALICE CREISCHER, MAX JORGE HINDERER CRUZ

Reading from the Potosí Principle – Archive: Issue N03 / Introduction

"How can we sing the alien song in the land of the Lord?"

is the title of the third chapter of the Potosí Project by Alice Creischer and Andreas Siekmann. The line refers to a poem by the Belgian Jesuit Hermann Hugo from his work Pia Desideria (1628), which became one of the most widespread writings of Baroque emblematics and raises new questions today: What role did artistic practice play as a method of missionary work? What alliances between Christianity, mercantilism, and the market economy served as legitimizing narratives of the conquista?

This introduction is accompanied by texts by Max Jorge Hinderer Cruz. He wrote them for his column Tendencias of the newspaper LaRazón in La Paz shortly before and during the coup d'état in Bolivia and the clerical-fascist transitional government for the imaginary echo chamber of a local and international cultural public.
