Chimurenga is a pan-African platform for literature, art and politics founded in 2002 by ADKDW member Ntone Edjabe. Chimurenga brings together a variety of voices from across Africa and the Diaspora and functions as a free, innovative forum for political reflection on Africa by Africans. It publishes regular journals and publications on culture, art, politics, and urban life in Africa. Also part of the Chimurenga universe is the Pan African Space Station (PASS) – an online radio station and pop-up studio.

In collaboration with Akademie der Künste der Welt (Academy of the Arts of the World, ADKDW), Cimurenga will broadcast Liberation Radio. The week-long live radio format is part of an ongoing research initiative that focuses on the role of radio, music, and creative arts in the liberation struggle and examines how radio has shaped cultural production across the African world.

The first session focuses on the liberation movements that participated in the Black African Festival of Arts FESTAC '77 in Lagos in the 1970s. The second session is dedicated to the fictional radio station of the anti-colonial movement MAC, founded by African nationalists from the Portuguese colonies in the late 1950s.

The Liberation Radio project brings together artists, activists and historians concerned with the history of the anti-colonial struggle in Southern Africa. Featuring jazz historian Gwen Ansell, researcher Ali Hlongwane, scholar Uhuru Phalafala and journalist Percy Mabandu, among others. Liberation Radio will also include contributions from contemporary musicians and artists. The project Umzabalazo by composer Mandisi Dyantyis deals with political struggle and freedom songs. Neo Muyanga, also a composer, explores black music and the aesthetics of protest in his project Revolting Songs. Also featured will be performance artist Masello Montana's Vocal Museum, art collective Iphupho l'ka Biko, and many others.

Liberation Radio will be broadcast live at the Pan African Space Station from March 14 03–18 03 and will be available afterwards as Audio-on-Demand at adkdw.org.
