TkH – Walking Theory/Teorija koja Hoda, Part 1 Social Dramaturgy in Yugoslavia

TkH – Walking Theory is a collective from Belgrade whose members are theorists and artists coming from the fields of performance theory and practice, theater, cinema, and visual arts. Bojana Cvejić, Marta Popivoda, and Ana Vujanović will present two recent TkH productions: Yugoslavia, How Ideology Moved Our Collective Body (film, 62 min., Serbia/France/Germany, 2013) and Public Sphere by Performance (publication, bbooks, Berlin, 2012). Popivoda collected and analyzed film and video footage from the period 1945–2000 in Yugoslavia, focusing on state performances as well as counter demonstrations. Going back through this archive, the film Yugoslavia, How Ideology Moved Our Collective Body traces how communist ideology was gradually exhausted through changes occurring in relations between the populace, ideology, and the state. In the context of the book Public Sphere by Performance, Cvejić and Vujanović will discuss social choreography and social drama as instruments for describing the discontinuous experiences of participation in the public sphere in former socialist Yugoslavia and under the conditions of contemporary Western neoliberalism.
