Young Turks – The Film Köken Ergun

with KÖKEN ERGUN

Köken Ergun’s new film deals with cultural expansionism today. Shot in Turkey, Kenya and Indonesia, it focuses on the global cultural influence of Turkey through the network of Turkish Schools operating in more than 140 countries. The film revolves around the Turkish Language Olympics, a popular event organized annually through the network of these schools. The film documents the preparations of the Kenyan and Indonesian students for the Olympics as well as the actual event taking place in Turkey, revealing the curious interaction between Turkish spectators and the guest students speaking Turkish. Young Turks – The Film is the centerpiece of Young Turks, a large scale project that consists of an installation with several video interviews, three sculptures and a publication about the transformation of religious communities in society. After the screening, the artist joins sociologist Ayşe Çavdar in a discussion to elucidate the film in its larger context. The Young Turks project was funded with a grant from the Academy of the Arts of the World and now celebrates its premiere in Cologne.
