Between Secularism and Religiosity: Hopes and Possibilities for Radical Dialog in Turkey Today Ayşe Çavdar

Religion is no longer what it once was in Turkey. Since the emergence of a religious middle class in the 1990s, both its appearance and ist meaning have changed. Religion has become one of the most significant subjects for everyday political discussions. These have gathered a new momentum in recent years. During the Gezi Park protests, new channels for dialogue opened between anti-capitalist Muslims and secular resistance to the Islamist model of neoliberalization. The last general election showed that this is far more than a marginal conversation. In her lecture, sociologist Ayşe Çavdar follows the practical implications of the radical dialogue between religious and secular communities in Turkey today.
