Hope and Violence: Future-Building among Refugees

with Arjun Appadurai

Refugees are often seen as simple products of their pasts, as they flee suffering, oppression and fear, escaping from war, political persecution and economic hardship. They are less often seen as having “the capacity to aspire,” to hope, dream or imagine. But in exercising this capacity, especially in regard to their new and difficult journeys, they often have to contend with the violence of borders, police and hostile local populations. The journey to a new land without proper documents or security involves an inner struggle for all refugees, between the horizons of hope and the realities of fear, uncertainty and surveillance. In this process have to create new terms for the inner struggle between violence and hope. In his lecture, renowned thinker Arjun Appadurai explores the inner struggle between hope and violence in refugee populations.
