With BRANDON LABELLE, ANNA BROMLEY

Anna Bromley’s audio piece "Location Determination Difficulties" deals with the criminalisation and prosecution of the clandestine Münster "Radio Fledermaus" in autumn 1979. Along with reflections and voices of the former transmission team, Anna Bromley reads in archive documents of the police headquarters of Münster and the radio control measuring station in the Krefeld telecommunications office. The radio play contrasts the different framings of the radioactivists and the pursuits by the prosecuting authorities.

As a current fellow at the Kunsthochschule für Meiden in Cologne, Anna Bromley researches the language and speech policies of free radio between 1976 and 1986. In the years before the introduction of the dual broadcasting system, Radio Fledermaus and his circle of friends of free radios were a central voice for the German-speaking countries, demanding and producing a 'radio from below' in their broadcasts and publications. Their radio practice was in constant motion, marked by the careful secrecy of the broadcasting team, the serial, top-secret production of DIY broadcasting systems, the indirect handover of recorded cassettes with current programmes, of leaflet and poster productions and the search for constantly changing broadcasting locations which would allow another broadcast for a few minutes on certain Fridays.

“The Other Citizen” by Brandon LaBelle narrates the emergence of communities in movement, those shaped by neighborhood initiatives in Athens, solidarity economies of Jackson, acts of ecological care seeking. The Other Citizen is figured as a network, a poetic act, one that comes to reconstitute notions of kinship and what counts as rightful presence. The reading from the recently published book (of the same title) by the artist guides us into a scene of collaborative making, composed along with a recording from a workshop LaBelle co-facilitated in Santiago de Chile in 2019, focusing on community and collective improvisation. Including the participation of Ana María Briede, Mónica Bate, Federico Eisner, Gregorio Fontaine, Andrés Grumann, Matías Serrano, Bárbara Molina, Jessica Figueroa, Ignacia Biskupovic, Fernando Pérez Villalón, Brandon LaBelle, Soledad García Saavedra, Mauricio Barría, Carla Ansaldi, Sybil Bintrup, Samuel Ibarra, Josefina de la Maza, Agustín González, Mabel Olea, Aurora Eisner, Sofía Downey, and more.
