Hyphea

Like plants and animals, fungi are multicellular organisms. They consist of branching single-stranded filaments called hyphae (Greek: Ύφή, engl. interweaving). This image of a dynamic interweaving of hyphae strands is the starting point of a performance and research project on forms of touch and connection by Mouvoir and guests, directed by Stephanie Thiersch. The result is the experimental motion study Hyphea, which explores the question of what processes are activated when we reconcile humans with plants, flesh, and stone, fusing them into new structures. Hyphea draws our attention to how we constantly and repeatedly connect with our surroundings in new ways, as well as to the wondrous entanglements of an ecology that horizontalizes rather than hierarchizes – thus giving rise to utopian scenarios of connection.
